“The Sunnydale Kids” takes top honors at film festival

Last Friday was an exciting day here at Micro-Documentaries, as one of our short films, “The Sunnydale Kids,” won “Best Short” at the Mill Valley Surf Film Festival. The festival is a who’s who of surf filmmakers from around the world, and we were proud to be among the impressive array of films nominated for awards. Taking top honors for “Best Short” was icing on the cake.

“The Sunnydale Kids” is a film about the joy that a day at the beach with some surfboards can bring to a group of inspirational, yet direly impoverished inner-city children. Thanks to the vision and personal initiative of our director of post production, Adam Warmington, the microdoc quickly gained an audience online and found traction with the media, from The Guardian to Good to the San Francisco Chronicle. Since we first blogged about the piece in July, the film has been viewed nearly 36,000 times on Vimeo, YouTube, Surfline and MPORA.

The popularity of the film and the award are a reminder that if you get behind your films and strategically pursue media opportunities, you can gain valuable exposure for your organization and momentum for your movement.
