Solution Trailers

The future of documentary filmmaking is less about speaking truth to power and more about inspiring audiences with bold new visions, says Karen Everett of UC Berkeley. We agree.

One of our colleagues once explained what we do to a friend by saying that Micro-Documentaries makes “solution trailers.”

That has always been our interest: to shed light on the visions of the future that are in the minds of social and environmental innovators but not yet clear to their audiences. The solution trailers that emerge are meant as invitations to participate in those futures as a means of advancing their missions and their movements.

I was recently reminded of this when reading a blog post by Karen Everett of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. In addressing the future of film, she wrote: “There will always be a place for David and Goliath-type documentaries that speak truth to power. But the future of documentary filmmaking is becoming more integral-minded … making inspiring documentaries that treat evil with compassion and understanding and offer inspiring bold new ideas for solving problems.”
