From baby rearing to BASE jumping, vignettes tell a powerful story

A vignette is a powerful way to connect your audience with your story without ever speaking a word.

This week we’d like to share a pair of vignette micro-documentaries in honor of Father’s Day and all fathers and those who have stepped into a father role at any time.

[inlinelink video=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLErNXIYjMg”]The first vignette[/inlinelink] celebrates in a hilariously exaggerated way a reality that most fathers of babies will relate to — trying at all costs to put your baby to sleep. Not surprisingly the film has gone viral on YouTube, collecting more than 10 million views.

The distinguishing factor of a vignette is that it has no interview acting as the backbone. Instead it relays a taste of an experience without a spoken word. Notice how at the end of each of the above vignettes, we feel like we’ve been there and understand what’s inspiring the people on screen, even though they haven’t spoken a word to us through the camera.

The first vignette was filmed in about an hour or so, probably with a babycam. The second took years. Both are strong examples of ways that a vignette can be used to connect your audience with the familiar and the very foreign.

Happy Father’s Day!
