From the San Francisco Bay Area to the slums of Dhaka, enrich your travel by visiting local nonprofits

Visit.org simplifies the process of enriching ones travels by visiting local nonprofits. Why not learn to weave with women of the Awamaki cooperatives in the Andes?

One of the best parts of traveling, especially with my daughter, is visiting the programs of local non-profits.

Whether she has been scrubbing street dogs with Street Dog Care in Kathmandu, Nepal, attending a 4th-grade class in the Korail slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh, with BRAC, or visiting the babies of the Fundación Juan Felipe Gomez Escobar in Cartagena, Colombia, I have found no better way to connect with people, culture, history, and purpose.

Why not share this experience with more people? Last weekend I was enthusiastically sharing my latest project idea with my (very patient) husband. We would create a platform where you could easily find nonprofits to visit in the places where you were traveling, whether it be the San Francisco Bay Area or Mumbai or Morocco. The nonprofit organizations would package their site visits as programs to help their fundraising efforts. Perfect.

Turns out I wasn’t the only one thinking along these lines, which is a good thing for my husband, as short film production companies tend to keep their CEOs pretty busy. Yesterday, I discovered Visit.org through Indiegogo. I had to invest in them. It’s a great idea. Check it out and please let me know about your favorite nonprofit-visiting-travel adventure.
